When I thought of rosemary, I always associated its aroma with holiday turkey and mashed potatoes passed around Christmas time. But as I continued to learn about its potent effects, I realized that the warm feeling I always carried with me had a deeper layer to it.
Rosemary Creates Warmth
Rosemary is without a doubt one of my favorite staple herbs, and has a powerful warming effect on the cardiovascular system. The heart, brain, intestines, and lungs reap benefits from this particular plant, but it is to be noted that it creates warm energy (qi) and helps distribute blood throughout the body properly.
Rosemary & The Thyroid
This particular ability to spread warmth throughout the body means rosemary is an exceptional herb for those who suffer from cold hands & feet, or a dysregulated thyroid.
When the body has an inability to spread warmth and circulation, all bodily functions like metabolism, energy, digestion and sleep will all be sacrificed. This is why using rosemary in teas, soups and tinctures prophylactically can activate this internal warmth in order to improve these functions.
Rosemary in Postpartum
Rosemary is a wonderful staple herb during the postpartum season for many reasons. The womb during postpartum must be protected as it heals and this means cultivating heat internally. Rosemary in warming foods like broths, stews, and teas allow the body to properly circulate blood (warmth) for the recovery process.
Rosemary can not only help internally postpartum, but also externally on the hair. Hair loss is a very common postpartum symptom as the thyroid begins to experience dysregulation.
Rosemary Hair Water
Rosemary, when boiled in water and subsequently sprayed on the scalp, will actually be able to create circulation and stimulate hair follicles for regenerated hair growth!
This can also be done with rosemary oil and massaged into the scalp.
Some studies have shown that rosemary can be as effective as the hair thinning treatment minoxidil 2%.
This herb has enough efficacy behind its hair-growing abilities that even magazines like GQ and Vogue have touted its benefits for male pattern baldness.
I hope this has given you a good snapshot of the benefits that rosemary can provide! It’s always a good idea to add herbal knowledge to your medicinal toolbox.
